East Berlin & The Wall
On of our final venues in the summer of 1986 was Berlin, both East and West. These were still the days of Check Point Charlie. We hired a Taxi for a several hour tour of East Berlin. It was drab to say the least and there were still large bombed out areas. There were signs of reconstruction in 1986 but the work was just beginning as compared to West Berlin where there were few reminders remaining of the destruction. Remember, the Berlin wall did not come down until 1989.
Our driver lived in Chicago for several years following the war and he had a good command of English so the short tour was very informative. This was mid August and we probably were becoming lax regarding photos. See the section on Letters and Postcards, August 18, for descriptions of our Berlin visit.
